The windows between theater and streaming are shorter than ever, making it easier than ever to find nominees, but ever-increasing screening times (the average runtime for Best Picture nominees this year is a staggering 139 minutes ) may make it hard to squeeze them in. everything is fine. So why not give up and watch some award-winning animated shorts instead?
I take this more effective approach and watch award-winning animated short films from years and decades ago to set myself in the Oscar mood. It’s about as emotionally satisfying and much more effective. This year’s nominees are also worth checking out, but only a handful are available for streaming ( Deeds of Art above on YouTube; Round Robin on Netflix). Older winners are easier to find.
