13 Shows That Netflix Canceled Too Soon
After two seasons, Nextflix has canceled the family-friendly, critically acclaimed and (apparently) fairly popular series The Nanny Club . Compounding the blow to the show’s young fan base, given the relative lack of TV taking teens seriously, is the fact that we’ll never know exactly why it’s not.
Streaming services have complex and shady motives when it comes to shows they renew or cancel. While a broadcast network may look almost exclusively at how viewership translates into advertiser revenue, a streamer worries about how a show’s popularity translates into subscriptions. If a show doesn’t bring in new subscribers or generate the kind of passion that would lead fans to cancel it if it didn’t exist , viewership almost doesn’t matter. There’s also the fact that shows are increasingly competing internationally – as BSC creator Rachel Shukert told Vulture , “when your show is doing very well in North America, like ours, as far as Netflix is concerned, almost everyone who’s going to have Netflix [in North America] is. They aim to stimulate subscriber growth in other parts of the world.” Bottom line: When something good is canceled in its prime, we’re left with only guesswork, guesswork, and disappointment, especially when the shows we love aren’t the same anymore. t were given the opportunity to complete their storylines. Ironically, this can only make viewers much more reluctant to try new things, fearing they will fall in love only to be left in limbo again, making it even more difficult for unique shows to survive after a season or two. But if that’s the case, then Netflix can only blame itself on its reputation for canceling great shows after a season or two. Let’s take as evidence a whole dozen series that they threw out too soon.
