15 Anti-Valentine Movies That Remind You That Love Can Suck
Is Valentine’s Day a beautiful tribute to one of the most fundamental parts of the human experience, or a made-up holiday designed to get you to spend money you don’t have on candy that no one wants? It could be both, but there’s no doubt that many February 14th rituals are outdated and restrictive, based on the assumption that everyone wants a romantic relationship—usually cis, heterosexual. It’s hard to find simple birthday cards for gay couples; finding anyone that celebrates other types of relationships is next to impossible. (Note to card companies: polyamory means more people in a relationship, and therefore more cards to sell.) All of this to say that there is absolutely nothing wrong with ignoring the holiday, or even hating it a bit. And if you do, you can still mark the occasion with a movie that reminds you that romance often goes wrong and that love can actually be terrible: poisonous, misguided, all-consuming in a bad way. These are films that can be watched alone or with a partner (a realist).
