Dips & Drinks Theme Will Give Your Super Bowl Party a Competitive Edge
My most successful adult birthday party was my last. In my 35th year, friends and family used to gather in my newly acquired backyard to eat, drink and have fun. It was a lunch on a very simple topic: Dips & Drinks .
I told each guest to bring water and/or a drink to share with other guests and they did. I didn’t tell anyone what sauce or drink to bring and didn’t try in any way to prevent the sauce or drink from matching and yet there was only one case where two people brought the same sauce (onion) and both were very good . .
This format works well for both birthdays and holiday parties, but for a Super Bowl party? It’s a slam dunk, my friend. Home run. Apple. Sauces are the best food for watching football. You don’t need cutlery, and the sauce can be consumed with a shovel, so you can keep eating while your eyes are on the halftime show or commercial (or game).
Many favorite football-watching appetizers are already sauces—guacamole, spinach and artichoke sauce, cowboy caviar sauce, cheese sauce —and those that aren’t can be turned into one sauce without too much trouble. ( Pizza sauce is good, as is any other Buffalo variety .)
Throwing a Dips & Drinks Super Bowl party is a bit of a competition for your guests. People will be more creative if you give them a framework, and dip is the most amazing framework of all.
I admit that people tend to focus on the Dips & Drinks party more than the drinks, but that’s okay. Everyone will bring their favorite six-pack, cheap beer can be paired with cheap champagne with a lowercase “c “. And at least one person will come with a themed cocktail. (This person is a nerd, but a nerd with a nice bar.)
