How to Prevent Contacts From Finding Your Twitter Profile

When it comes to Twitter – and all social media, for that matter – we all have our own comfort levels depending on how public we are. Some of us actively want to share our thoughts with as many people as possible, while others treat Twitter as a space for our close friends. As you get closer to the latter, you probably hate it when random people in your life stumble upon your account. If the phrase “Aunt Judy is following you now” strikes fear in your heart, you can do something about it.

Twitter makes it easy for your contacts to find you on the platform; the company may pretend they want your tweets to be shared with as many of your friends and family as possible, but in reality they just want to maximize engagement as much as possible. On the other hand, you probably want more control over who sees your content. If you don’t want to make your account private, you can simply block Twitter from sharing your profile with people who have your email address or phone number.

How to prevent Twitter from sharing your profile with your contacts

While this option is a little hidden, it’s easy to turn it off. To get started, of course, open Twitter. It doesn’t matter if you use your computer or smartphone; on the desktop, select “More”; on iOS or Android, tap your profile picture.

Then go to Settings & Privacy > Privacy & Security > Discovery & Contacts . From here, you’ll see two settings that determine whether people can find your account from your contact information; if you want to prevent people who have your email address from finding your Twitter, uncheck the box next to this option. If you want to prevent people who have your phone number from finding your Twitter, uncheck the box next to this option.

Optionally, you can select “Manage Contacts” to delete any and all contacts you have shared on Twitter. While this step won’t stop Twitter from sharing your account with your contacts (this is still controlled by the settings you changed above), it will prevent Twitter from recommending that you follow those accounts. In addition, it is also useful to disable personal data from major social networks whenever possible.
