There are so many factors to consider when making a home buying decision: neighborhood, public transportation options, school districts, cultural offerings, weather, proximity to family (whether you prefer them far away or nearby) – the list goes on. . And then, of course, there is the financial side of things, such as the price of houses in the area and the overall cost of living.
But there is another cost that people may overlook: the cost of maintaining a home. As nice as it would be if our house existed in some kind of invisible bubble that protected it from bad weather, accidents and normal wear and tear, these things will happen, which means that your house will need regular maintenance.
And just like the houses themselves, the cost of the necessary services and materials varies depending on your location. Here are the most expensive states to maintain a house.
Most Expensive States to Maintain a Home
Before we get into which states made the list, let’s talk about how they got there. The states below were identified as the most expensive to maintain a home in a survey conducted by Angi (formerly Angie’s List) in which 1,000 homeowners were asked about their most recent home renovation (where they hired a professional rather than a DIY job) and then calculated the total dollar amount spent on services in each state, based on the average cost of home repairs.
According to the survey, the top 10 most expensive states to own a house are:
- Texas
- Florida
- California
- Illinois
- Georgia
- North Carolina
- Ohio
- Pennsylvania
- New York
- Missouri

Of the states with the highest home maintenance costs, 53% of Ohio residents reported that wear and tear was the most common reason for their home to be renovated—more than in any other state. This is followed by Missouri and North Carolina, where 47% of renovations are caused by simply living in a home for an extended period of time.
