What’s New on Netflix in February 2022

With all the growth in streaming that has killed theaters and ruined the world of entertainment, I have to admit that I’m still impressed by the weird things that Netflix and the like are spending their billions on. As audiences segment themselves more and more, content becomes more niche, to the point where one of the most popular streamer offerings in the world for February 2022 is an original animated series based on a quirky indie video game.

Show Cuphead! (February 18) mimics the character designs (if not adorable retro animation) of Cuphead , a quirky 2017 shooter developed by Studio MDHR. A huge success by independent game standards – with over six million copies sold – this doesn’t feel like any Hollywood producer’s first bet on a mainstream hit show, even though it’s remarkably suited to it : of the Century of American Animation ” that began in the 1920s, its wacky character design (that title describes the characters literally) and frantic action mean it hardly needs to be translated between mediums.

However, some things seem to have been sacrificed for the move. While the game has been painstakingly hand-animated in the style of those vintage cartoon shorts, the show is created using modern computer animation techniques, giving it a completely different feel despite the faithful character designs. Also, considering it’s debuting under the Netflix Family banner, I can only assume that some of the more edgy narrative edges, which include a literal deal with the devil and a vicious battle for the heroes’ lost souls, have been a little blurry. However, I will try it with glee.

Here’s everything else coming to Netflix this month, including new episodes of Space Force (remember that? With Steve Carell? May 2020 was so long ago) and Matt Groing ‘s Disenchantment (February 9), more shenanigans with real-life relationship on “Love is Blind” – both original flavor (February 11) and “Love is Blind Japan” (February 8) – Tyler Perry’s new movie starring Madea (February 25), and on February 1 – the new season of “A Doll’s House” Gabby” (this is for my children). ).
