What’s New at Disney + January 2022
When Disney acquired 20th Century Fox in 2019, it also acquired the once-venerable studio’s animation list that was in development, including two comic-inspired objects that I really loved: Mouse Guard , discontinued two weeks in advance. production , and Nimona , which was only 10 months away from construction when the new owners closed production company Blue Sky Studios. Mouse Guard made sense in a way — a $ 150 action adventure with a bunch of mice and swords in the lead was always a challenge. (Great, but difficult to sell.) But Nimona pissed me off. Not only because it was so close to completion, but also because it is a weirdly positive story about a headstrong young sorceress who learns from the supposedly villainous, mostly depressed former knight Ballister Blackheart, who is in a bitter feud with the handsome man. Sir Ambrosius Goldenloin was something completely different. Based on the Eisner Prize-winning graphic novel Noel Stevenson, it tackled complex moral and mental health issues, highlighted homosexual romance, and contained a self-event message that would be groundbreaking for high-budget studio animation. But Disney killed that. Don’t worry, they’ve kept another Blue Sky animation project: The Sixth Ice Age movie.
Buck Wild’s Ice Age Adventure hits Disney + on January 28th. Howbeit. Unless you’re a fan of computer rodents, there isn’t much new to support your Disney + subscription this month. The good thing for the streamer’s subscription bets is that it will still be releasing episodes of Boba Fett’s Book throughout the month.
