How to Check If Your IPhone Has Genuine Apple Parts Without Opening It

Apple has always placed great emphasis on using Genuine Apple Parts to repair iPhone, and now, with iOS15.2, you can finally check to see if any nongenuine parts have been used in yours. If you only buy new iPhones, this is probably not of much interest to you; however, if you buy used iPhones on Craigslist, Facebook, or eBay, you should check your parts and service history before agreeing to a deal.

Lots of questionable sellers try to slip the iPhone with unauthorized parts, which could be a security risk. A fake iPhone battery can actually breathe or even explode under normal conditions of use, for example, and this is not a risk worth taking.

Having said that, “non-original parts” are also somewhat misleading because Apple is known to block parts replacement even between iPhones. As iFixit discovered , you can’t take a display off a new iPhone and insert it into another iPhone – some parts are just hardcoded into your device.

The Right to Repair movement has long sought easier ways to repair damaged iPhones, and Apple recently took a decent first step by giving people access to genuine Apple parts and tools . With iOS 15.2’s parts history and service feature, your friendly iPhone repair technician can quickly check if everything went smoothly with the repair.

Which iPhones allow you to check your parts and service history?

To check the parts and service history on your iPhone, you need to upgrade to iOS 15.2. At the time of this writing, the update was available as part of the iOS public beta program . If you don’t like it, you can wait a bit until Apple makes it available to everyone. Once you get this, you will be able to check your parts and service history on the following iPhones:

  • iPhone XR
  • iPhone XS
  • iPhone XS Max
  • iPhone SE (2nd generation)
  • iPhone 11
  • iPhone 11 Pro
  • iPhone 11 Pro Max
  • iPhone 12 mini
  • iPhone 12
  • iPhone 12 Pro
  • iPhone 12 Pro Max
  • iPhone 13 mini
  • iPhone 13

  • iPhone 13 Pro Max

How to check parts and service history on your iPhone

Even if you have iOS 15.2, you will only be able to view your iPhone’s parts and service history after it has been serviced. If you’ve bought a new iPhone and never used any hardware, this option doesn’t appear in the Settings section. To check your parts and service history, go to Settings> General> About and you will see the Parts and Service History section.

Another useful thing to know is that the parts and service history option shows different details for different devices. Older phones like the iPhone XR, XS series, and iPhone SE (2nd generation) will only display if the battery has been replaced. For the iPhone 11 series, you will be able to see if the battery or display has been replaced. With newer devices like the iPhone 12 and 13 series, you’ll be able to see if the battery, camera, or display have been replaced.

When you click an option under Parts and Service History, you will see if the part is genuine. If so, you will see a genuine Apple part on the screen.

If it is not genuine or not replaceable, you will see an error marked ” Unknown part” . This means that the part you replaced is either not genuine, is not working properly, or has already been used on another iPhone. The latter option is a little tricky because ideally you should be allowed to use original parts from another iPhone without errors. However, it is helpful to know if the replacement part is new. In most cases, you’re better off using a new iPhone part to replace the broken part.
