What’s New on Netflix in December 2021

Netflix apparently doesn’t want you to go out again until 2022, given how many things they’ll squeeze into their service in December: with new seasons of past breakouts, stellar original films, special comedy series, and a plethora of reality TV shows. who needs reality? Reality is depressing!

Without a doubt, the biggest flop of the month is the second season of The Witcher (December 17), heavy metal’s response to Game of Thrones , the surprise worldwide genre TV hit of 2019. Based on the novels of the Polish writer Andrzej. Sapkowski, the series does well by capturing the weirder elements of epic fantasy, none of that crap, “it’s actually more of a historical drama with light magic.” Just watch this trailer: we have dragons and monsters of all sizes, human giant trees, a frighteningly living flaming body, moving houses, and even (gasping for breath) the female protagonist in Ciri (Freya Allan) in the foreground who will spend less time to run this season and more time to hone your strength with Henry Cavill’s Geralt of Rivia. Fun but not a joke, serious but not harsh, and definitely weird. More fantasy please.

And speaking of fantasy, Netflix will also debut in yet another season of Emily in Paris (December 22), which I haven’t seen, but which I understand is the hours of hate that drove many of you into the beginning of the pandemic. And hey, the pandemic … is still not over, so you could probably use it somewhere to channel your hate.

It’s also worth highlighting the year-end film list for at least two Oscar nominees. Don’t Look Up Stars – Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence as the two astronomers who discovered a large asteroid heading towards Earth, and are increasingly worried when no one seems to take the threat seriously, which is funny because in real life governments always take such existential threats seriously. and never completely miss the ball when billions of lives are at stake. Also, the cast includes pretty much every Oscar-winning Adam McKay ( Big Short ) scriptwriter and director I’ve ever met, which is pretty cool. Far more restrained, albeit no less boisterous and stellar, is Power of a Dog (December 1), a dark new western by New Zealand director Jane Campion ( Piano ) starring Benedict Cumberbatch, Kirsten Dunst and Jesse Plemons and many more familiar faces.

If you want to watch a movie that can really make you feel good, I highly recommend Hilda and the King of the Mountain (December 30th), the full-length sequel to Hilda , which is simply one of the most delightful of all. children’s entertainment I’ve ever tried to make my kids appreciate on many levels as I do.

All of this, plus a host of new comedy numbers (including Nicole Bayer’s first national treasure), more about the Great British Baking Show, and many more holiday content, including the Christmas edition of Sean the Sheep .
