How to Dress Well in Winter When You Feel Like Wearing Sweatpants
The COVID-19 pandemic prevailed last winter and also at the end of the 2019 season. This meant that many people spent a lot of time at home during the colder months — away from office dress code and getting rid of invitations to holiday parties where they told you to “put on something festive.”
But this winter, things will be different. While we are still living in a global pandemic, the widespread availability of COVID-19 vaccines (and flu shots) – not to mention the many workplaces that now require the in-person presence of employees – means we will take risks in public.
From a fashion standpoint, this can be problematic for two reasons:
- You forgot how to put together a presentable outfit; and
- You really want to keep wearing sweatpants.
But don’t worry: Wayne Edelman, CEO of Meurice Garment Care in New York, is ready to give some tips on how to dress this winter. Here’s what you need to know.
Create a neutral canvas
The winter months can be pretty dull and colorless, so it makes sense to wear bright prints and vibrant hues. But Edelman recommends doing this with accessories, wearing layers of neutral items underneath. “Stick to soft, solid or brighter colors such as maroon or dark green,” says Edelman . “Winter clothing is expensive, so choosing neutral tones can ensure they don’t go out of style and stay relevant for years to come.”
Choose clothes made from natural materials.
If you are worried about comfort, Edelman suggests that you give up synthetic clothing. “Natural fibers tend to be the warmest, such as wool, cashmere and mohair,” he explains .
Many layers
Yes, layering helps keep you warm, but it’s also a great way to get more out of your favorite items that might not be considered winter clothing. Do you have a favorite T-shirt or T-shirt? Throw a cardigan or blazer over it.
And while you do this, be versatile. “Don’t forget the tights with boots for shorter clothes so you don’t have to put away all those summer skirts and dresses,” says Edelman . “Plus, wear turtlenecks under your tees so you can still wear your cute summer tops.”
