You Can Set up “Low Power Mode” on Your IPhone

If your iPhone is draining too quickly, as is the case with any iPhone over a year old, there are a few tricks you can use to reduce battery drain. One of these tricks is to enable Low Power Mode on your iPhone. Of course, you can manually turn it on every time your battery runs out, or you can automate it to run at a specific time every day, or even when your battery reaches a certain percentage point.

By default, the iPhone’s low power state starts when the battery remains at 20 percent. For many people, however, this is already too late, because as your iPhone’s battery ages, the time it takes to go from 20 percent to zero also drops dramatically. This is where automation can save the day.

How to automatically turn on low power mode on iPhone

As with Automation on the iPhone, Apple’s Shortcuts app is just what you need. Download and install this app (if not already on your iPhone) as it will allow you to run automation routines on your iPhone.

Once that’s done, open Shortcuts and go to the Automation tab. Click the + button in the upper right corner and click Create Personal Automation . Now you can decide what is the trigger for your automation. If you want to run low power mode at a specific time every day, tap Time of Day and select the time and frequency (daily) of automation.

Click Next > Add Action . Use the search bar to find ” Set to low power mode” and select it from the results. Make sure your Automation Action says Enable Low Power Mode and click Next . In the last step, uncheck the ” Ask before launch” box, tap ” Don’t ask” and ” Done .

Your iPhone will now automatically go into low power mode at the time you choose.

Alternatively, you can trigger the same automation when your iPhone’s battery drops below a certain percentage. To do this, create a new Personal Automation and select Battery Level (instead of time of day) as the trigger. Use the slider to navigate to your desired battery percentage first. When you set this, select ” Fall below X%” (where X is your chosen percentage). The rest of the steps are the same as the steps you followed to set the low power mode at a specific time every day.

If you’re stranded, forgetting your charger and on a long flight without access to the charging port, you can try this ultra-low power shortcut. It will disable Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and other low battery sensors. It then resets the screen brightness to zero, and you can safely store your iPhone somewhere until you need to use it or access a charger.
