How to Use Spotify Mix to Mix Your Playlists With Friends

There are many ways to share music with friends via Spotify, but the company is rolling out a new Blend feature that allows users to automatically create a shared playlist that is updated daily based on listeners’ musical tastes. Mixes are available to all free and premium users, and you can invite any other user to create a mix together. Spotify takes over the curation process itself, filling the playlist with tracks it thinks both listeners will enjoy.

However, Blend focuses on more than general favorites. Any tracks you’ve added to favorites, added to your library, or listened to in the past may end up in a playlist.

You’ll see your Taste Score when you start a new mix to see how your preferences match up with your friend’s, but even people with similar tastes can end up in unexpected – or downright weird – mixed playlists.

To test this feature, I made a mixture with my partner. According to Spotify, we have a 73 percent match rate, which is acceptable since we are die-hard metalheads (we literally met in a mosh pit).

However, that slight 27 percent offset creates a rather eclectic mix, with our favorite death metal and hardcore punk bands sharing the spotlight with Megan Thee Stallion, Run the Jewels, and video game soundtracks.

Of course, if you come across a mix that conflicts too much, both users can favorite or hide songs from their own mix without affecting the other user’s playlist. But the possibility of weird playlists popping up is clearly part of the appeal of Blending Mode: to see how your musical tastes match up with your friends and family, and to share new music with each other.

How to Mix With Anyone on Spotify

  1. Open Spotify and select the “Search” tab.
  2. Scroll down and click Done for You.
  3. Select ” Create Blend”.
  4. Select the friend you want to mix with. If you don’t have Spotify friends yet, tap invite to share the Blend link with a phone contact via your messaging app, email, or social media.
  5. Your friend must accept the invitation to create the mix. You will receive an in-app notification and push notification when the mixture is ready. You can also tap Share This Story to share the playlist with other social media apps.
  6. Your mixes are available in the Library tab.
