How to Enable and Configure Dark Mode in Windows 11

Like almost every other major operating system currently available, Windows 11 offers users options for its interface in light and dark modes. Dark modes are more pleasing to the eye, especially in dimly lit rooms or at night. In some cases, they even reduce the power consumption of your device’s display.

Turning on Windows 11 Dark Mode is very simple:

  1. Go to Settings> System> Personalization> Colors.
  2. From the Select a Mode drop-down list, select Dark .

That’s all. As I said, pretty simple. However, this only applies to the default dark mode colors of your current theme. If you want, you can delve deeper into Windows 11 settings and further customize the look and feel of your PC’s interface.

Use a pre-built Windows 11 theme

Like Windows 10, Windows 11 allows you to apply unique themes that change everything in the interface in one fell swoop – wallpapers, menu and folder colors, accent colors, icons, and more.

  1. Go to Settings> System> Personalization> Themes .
  2. Select the theme you want from the Current Theme drop-down menu. The Windows (Dark) theme is probably the safest option, but there are several others that offer color schemes similar to Dark Mode.
  3. If you don’t like any of the pre-enabled options, click Browse Themes to browse and download additional themes available in the Microsoft Store.
  4. Once you’ve selected your new theme, click Apply to enable it.

Use your own theme colors

If you don’t like the default theme colors, you can change them in the personalization settings. There are several settings available to help you create your own dark (or light) theme colors.

  1. Go to Settings> System> Personalization> Colors.
  2. From the Select a Mode drop-down list, select Custom .
  3. Choose whether you want windows and menus to use the default themes, Dark or Light.
  4. Scroll down and set Accent Color to Manual.
  5. Choose colors from the menu, or click Browse Colors using the Color Picker to find the one you like best.
  6. You can also use radio buttons to apply accent color to taskbar or folder / application window borders.

Use a contrasting theme

Windows 11 Personalization Options also include Contrast Themes, designed for users with specific vision-based accessibility requirements. As the name suggests, contrasting themes use contrasting color combinations that make background text easier to read (light text and dark background for menus, or dark text and light background), and many of them work like dark themes.

You can turn contrast themes on or off at any time by pressing Left Alt + Left Shift + Print Screen , but you will probably want to edit the contrast theme in Windows 11 settings as well.

There are two ways to find a menu of contrasting themes:

  • Settings> System> Personalization> Themes> Contrast themes
  • Settings> Accessibility> Contrast Themes

Once you’re in the Contrast Themes menu, choose the color scheme you like best from the drop-down menu. You can also click Edit to customize the contrasting theme.
