How to Try Out Chrome’s Save Group of Tabs Early On

Preservation of tab groups is currently only available in Chrome Canary for desktop, but its presence in the latest test build means it will soon be rolled out to stable. You can try it ahead of time by downloading Chrome Canary version 95, which is available from the Chrome downloads page. However, keep in mind that Chrome Canary is the most experimental version of Chrome available. Also, like many unfinished Chrome features, enabling tab group saving requires changing experimental browser flags. If you’re not careful, playing with them can cause problems; just make sure you only change the flag associated with the function and you should be fine. However, no experimental flag toggling is required after the feature is deployed to stable.
- Open Chrome Canary and go to chrome: // flags.
- Use the search bar to find “tab-groups-save”.
- Click the drop-down menu under the Save Tab Groups option and set it to Enabled.
- Click Restart when prompted to save your changes and restart your browser.
You can now save and recall tab groups in Chrome Canary. This is how it works:
- Open a new tab in Chrome Canary, then click the right mouse button in the tab menu and select “Add a tab into a new group.”
- Set the title and color of the tab (if you like). You can also add additional tabs to the group.
- To save a tab group, right-click the colored circle of the tab group.
- Toggle Save Group. The tabs will now appear in your history if you want to bring them up later.
To restore a group of tabs:
- Click the three-dot menu icon in the upper-right corner of your browser and choose History> Recently Closed> Tabs> (Tab Group Name).
- You can also bring up a closed tab group directly by pressing Ctrl + Shift + T.
