Seriously, Get Rid of These Famous Dog Food Brands Right Now
Your dog cannot express in words how he is feeling, which means that the only way to know when he is sick is by observing his physical symptoms. But when it comes to food poisoning, besides having to clean up after a few unrests, there is always the risk that your dog will develop long-term problems – or you won’t know if something is wrong until it’s too late.
Midwestern Pet Foods came under fire in January this year after recalling six dry dog food mixtures allegedly containing a toxic carcinogen called aflatoxin. At the time, the FDA suspected tainted food was responsible for the deaths of more than 70 dogs and disease for approximately 80 people.
Another review was conducted in March for 10 varieties of cat and dog food believed to have been infected with Salmonella. The FDA has now issued a warning that Midwestern Pet Foods has identified “serious violations” of food safety regulations that could have resulted in the deaths of more than 130 dogs and 220 of them.
Bottom line: Definitely ditch any Midwestern Pet Foods products now. And with growing evidence of its inadequate safety precautions, you may want to move away from this company’s pet food altogether in the future.
What brands are included in Midwestern Pet Foods?
In the Midwest, dog food is sold under the following brand names:
- Earthborn holistic
- Unrefined
- Risk
- Pro Pac
- Useful
- CanineX
- Sportmix
- Sportstrail
- Meridian
- Noon Better
Look for any products that contain the above names, including hybrids like the Sportmix Wholesomes.
Which Midwestern Pet Foods brands have been recalled?
The Salmonella recall in March related to the brands CanineX, Earthborn Holistic, Venture, Unrefined, Sportmix Wholesomes, Pro Pac, Pro Pac Ultimates, Sportstrail, Sportmix and Meridian with batch code “EXP AUG / 02/22 / M1 / L # (you see it on the back of the food bag). These products were manufactured at the company’s plant in Monmouth, Illinois.
The January recall applied to all corn-based products manufactured at the Chickasha manufacturing facility in Oklahoma that expire on or before July 2, 2022. This is a lot of pet food. The batch code for this call is “EXP03 / 03/22/05 / L # / B ### / HH: MM” .
Note that the FDA results were released following inspections at four plants, which means the issue may be even bigger than current reviews suggest. Throw away this pet food (dispose of it so wild animals do not get into it) and wash and disinfect everything it touches. Your dog will be grateful to you.
