Sponges Should Be Placed in Indoor Plants.
Some plants, such as azaleas and rhododendrons , like moisture, but do not like stagnant water for a long time. There is a delicate balance between adequate plant moisture and root flooding that can cause disease. But you can prevent root rot and keep plants moist longer – you just need a few sponges.
What is Root Rot?
Root rot is a disease that affects the roots of a plant when they are over-watered or excess water cannot drain from the pot. As Elite Tree Care explains, “Wet conditions prevent the roots from absorbing all the oxygen they need to live. As the oxygen-deprived roots die and decompose, their rot can spread to healthier roots. ”
As soon as the plant stops receiving oxygen through the roots, you will begin to see wilted leaves, stunted growth and early leaf fall. And in some cases, suffocated roots can breed a soil fungus that infects the roots.
How to prevent root rot
The best way to prevent root rot is to buy a suitable pot . Plants that love moisture live best in plastic or glazed ceramic pots to retain water, but need drainage holes to drain excess. Water only as needed and stick to the recommended amount for your particular plant.
Test for moisture by sticking your finger into the soil 1 to 2 inches – if your finger comes out with mud or a little damp, the soil is damp and you can water another day (depending on the type of plant).
How sponges can help
One way to balance the water level in your houseplants is to put sponges on the bottom of the pot . Before potting the plant, collect a few sponges, cut them in half (or less if needed) and place on the bottom. Cover with soil, plant and water as usual.
The sponge will absorb excess water in the soil, and the holes will provide aeration, preventing root drowning and oxygen loss. The sponges also release water slowly while maintaining a constant moisture level. As a result, you won’t need to water as often and your plants should grow and grow normally.
