How to Grow a Blueberry Bush at Home
Blueberries, along with strawberries, watermelon and peaches, are one of the signature fruit flavors of summer. And if you find yourself going through container after container every year, you may have wondered about the possibility of growing your own. (That is, unless you currently live on a farm or somewhere with a lot of arable land).
As it turned out, you can not only grow your own blueberry bush, but also do it in the kitchen. Here’s what you need to know.
How to grow a blueberry bush
Technically, growing your own blueberry bush at home has always been an option, but thanks to viral TikTok, more people are now aware of it. The video, posted by Armen Adamjan (aka @creative_explained ), walks the viewer through the planting process, starting with one blueberry.
Start by filling a small pot (one with drainage holes in the bottom) with earth. Then take blueberries and squeeze them out, releasing the seeds. From there, stick it into a pot and cover with a light layer of soil, then water. Then place a cup, glass, or bottle over it to create a mini greenhouse and hold in moisture. (In the video, he cuts off the bottom of a plastic bottle and uses it.)
Once the seedling is out of the soil, you can open it up and grow it like other houseplants, making sure it gets enough sunlight and water. How much water exactly? According to an article on MindBodyGreen , you need to water the plant every week and keep it in a place where the soil is moist but not soggy.
When to move your blueberry plant outdoors
According to TikTok, when the sprout is six inches tall (and outdoor conditions are good for growing plants), move the baby bush outside and continue tending there. However, an article on MindBodyGreen says that you can keep blueberries indoors for several years – or until they start bearing fruit – before replanting them outdoors.
And yes, it might take blueberries several years to produce true blueberries, so patience is key.
