How to Backup and Restore PlayStation 5 Data
Backing up your PC, smartphone, and other devices ensures that you can recover your data in the event of a disaster, sudden power outage, or complete hardware failure, but not many people think of doing the same for their game consoles. Luckily, PlayStation 5 makes it easy to back up your files to an external USB device, and PlayStation Plus subscribers can safely copy their saved game data to the cloud.
Please note that this data backup is different from expanding PS5 storage using an external drive. While they technically achieve similar results, the backup and restore features are useful for offloading data you don’t need and immediately available on your PS5, and for recovering in the event of a data failure or corruption.
The PS5 storage expansion, on the other hand, allows you to install (and in some cases play) games from the hard drive itself, but this requires certain types of hard drives and USB cables. We’ll cover how to expand the available storage on your PS5 in a separate post, but for now, let’s take a look at how to back up your PS5 data.
Backup & Restore PS5 Data with USB External Hard Drive
The PS5 backup and restore function works with a wide variety of USB storage devices, but you need to make sure there is enough free space on your external drive before starting the backup process.
- Go to Settings> System> Backup & Restore.
- Select “PS5 Backup”.
- Connect your hard drive to your PS5 using a USB cable.
- Select the data to back up. The bar in the lower right corner shows how much space the selected data will take on the external drive.
- Select “Next”, then “Backup” to start the process and wait for the data to be copied. To avoid data corruption, do not move, disconnect or turn off your PS5 or USB storage while the transfer is active.
After backing up the data, you can disconnect the USB device. It will be safely stored in case you need to recover data from a USB drive. Here’s how to back up if you ever need to:
- Connect your USB backup drive to your PS5 and turn on your console.
- From the PS5 home screen, go to Settings> System> Backup & Restore.
- Select “Repair PS5”.
- Select the data you want to copy from your drive to your PS5, then follow the onscreen instructions to start transferring.
- Wait while the files are copied. Once again, do not unplug or turn off your PS5 or USB storage while the transfer is active.
How to save data on PS5 to the cloud
While USB backups allow you to create a physical restore point for all of your PS5’s data, PS Plus users can also back up their saved games to the cloud. This requires an active PS Plus subscription and automatic updates, which must be turned on on your PS5, but the console will automatically back up your saves once this feature is turned on. This is how it works:
- On your PS5, go to Settings> System> Power Saving> Rest Mode Features and turn on Stay Connected Online.
- Then go to Settings> Saved Data and Game / Application Settings .
- To enable cloud backup for PS5 games, choose PS5 Games> Sync Saved Data and turn on Auto-sync Saved Data.
- To enable cloud backup for PS4 games installed on your PS5, select PS4 Games, then enable Auto Upload .
Once the options are enabled, PS5 save data will automatically sync between the cloud and your console, so you always have the most recent save data available in both locations. However, PS4 data must be manually loaded onto the console from the game’s launch page.
