Remove Duplicate Google Contacts Because It’s Easier Than You Think
Not everyone has their address books organized, mainly because we end up storing someone’s email address in one contact and their phone number in another. If you’ve recently realized that you’re in a mess and can’t find what you are looking for quickly, you can use Google’s contact merge and fix tool to clean up your messy address book. First, log into Google Contacts .
How to import an address book to Google Contacts
Even if your contacts are not yet in Google Contacts, you can click Import in the left pane and submit them for repair.
You will need to export your contacts to .csv or vCard (.vcf) and then you can import them to Google Contacts by clicking Choose File , retrieving the file from your computer and clicking Import to complete the process.
How to merge contacts and remove duplicates
Now that your contacts are on Google, click Merge and Fix in the left pane. It may not show your new additions right away, but refresh the page and it will show you all your contacts, including the imported ones.
At this point, you don’t need to do anything – just wait a few seconds and Google Contacts will detect any duplicate entries. Once this is done, you can quickly check if the duplicates are indeed duplicate entries. After all, you might know three different people named Annie, and you definitely don’t want to store all of their phone numbers under a general entry in your address book.
All duplicate entries are listed in the right pane of the Google Contacts Merge and Fix page. If you don’t want to merge a specific set of contacts, you can click Close .
When you’re done viewing the duplicate entries, tap Combine All, and in a few seconds, Google Contacts will fix your address book.
How to export Google contacts for another service
If Google Contacts is the primary service you use to sync and store your address book, you’re good to go; but if you are using any other service, you can click the Export button in the left pane to create a downloadable file containing a fixed address book. The last step is to import these contacts into the service of your choice.
