Why Do I Have a Bunch of Mini Lollipops in My Freezer?
When I was about six years old, my mom and sisters and I moved from Aberdeen, Mississippi to Los Angeles, California. My father stayed in the south and the twins and I visited him in the summer. I don’t know if you’ve ever been to the north of the Mississippi in July, but it’s very hot, humid and full of insects.
We didn’t have a pool, but someone (my father or grandmother) joined the country club so we could swim in theirs. I remember two things very well: that in a shallow pool (for babies) a large mural was painted on the floor of Ariel from The Little Mermaid – is it still called a mural if it’s on the floor? – and I remember there were frozen chocolate bars at the concession stand.
My standard concession stand order was frozen Twix. I liked the way he clicked. Instead of long strings of sticky caramel and crumbly cookies, freezing kept things tidy and tidy – the split insides looked more geological than edible, and I appreciated the clean lines. Most important, though, the chocolate bar was cold , and eating anything that wasn’t cold, standing in the scorching Mississippi sun was very unpleasant.
I no longer live in the south, but it seems to me that it is getting unbearably hot everywhere now, at least for a few weeks a year. Filling the freezer with ice cream and popsicles can help cope with the heat, but few people fill their freezer with chocolate bars and I think it’s worth it.
The frozen mini chocolate bar offers some cool respite on a sweltering day, but it’s not nearly as difficult as an ice cream sandwich, for example. I probably would feel bad if I ate an ice cream sandwich every time I got unpleasantly sweaty, but the frozen mini chocolate bar satisfies the cold food cravings that occur multiple times a day without making me feel like shit.
I don’t have kids, but I expect them to enjoy frozen mini chocolate bars as well, especially after swimming in the pool for a few hours, or perhaps as a reward for doing summer chores.
Due to their small size, there is no reason not to store a supply of mini chocolate bars in the freezer. Buy a varied bag from your favorite candy vendor, toss it in the freezer (or put it in a plastic container for neatness), and then eat them as needed. I recommend getting a Twix bag. I still love the way it clicks.
