Update HBOMax If You’re an Apple TV User

Apple TV users should update the HBOMax app now to fix some – but not all – of the bugs introduced in last week’s version update.

HBOMax version 5.30.1, released on June 5, replaced tvOS ‘own video player with a custom player that is causing problems for many Apple TV users. According to numerous reports online , the new custom player is slow, unresponsive, and doesn’t seem to work with the newest Siri Remote.

Thankfully, HBOMax released an emergency patch on Tuesday that brings the app back to tvOS’s built-in video player and should fix playback issues and restore Siri Remote support – at least for some users.

How to update HBOMax on Apple TV

The patch must be downloaded and installed in the background for users who have automatic updates enabled on their Apple TV. You can also manually download the update by going to Settings> Apps, then select the HBOMax update.

If you uninstalled HBOMax after adding the custom video player, you can re-download it from the app store to get the latest version with the built-in tvOS player.

There are a few more mistakes that need to be fixed.

It looks like installing the update restores the correct playback controls, but doesn’t fix everything. Some users still cannot control HBOMax with the Siri Remote, while others are reporting new issues after the update, including:

  • Content thumbnails are not displayed
  • Long loading times
  • Incorrect subtitles

There are reports that iOS and iPad users are also facing similar issues. We were unable to find workarounds for these persistent bugs, but the HBOMax team is aware of them and is working on other fixes.

The official HBOMax Reddit account asks users to submit bug reports via this contact form on the HBOMax help page or tweet @HBOMaxHelp on Twitter . A support representative will respond if they can help with the issue, and your reports will help developers identify issues that need to be fixed in future updates.
