How to Get Rid of Fruit Flies in the Kitchen
It’s officially summer now (okay, not officially), and with the warm weather and weekend parties, unwanted kitchen pests come along. Yes, as your kitchen gets hotter and wetter, tiny fruit flies will inevitably start to appear.
Fruit fly control begins with the fruit itself. Fruit flies enter your home with the pieces of fruit you bring from the store, so when you first notice flies, throw away any overripe fruit that might be on the counter and take out the trash right away. Store all new foods in the refrigerator until the contamination has cleared. Next, clean all containers or surfaces, remembering the bottom of the dustbin and the drain of the kitchen sink.
If the flies persist, you can create a trap by pouring apple cider vinegar into a microwave-safe bowl. Add a few drops of dish soap and microwave for 30 seconds. Place the trap on a rack for a day or two. Warm, scented vinegar will attract flies, and dishwashing detergent will loosen the surface tension so that as soon as the fly touches the liquid, it will fall right inward.
