Time to Update Your Google Pixel With a Different Security Patch (May 2021 Release)
The May 2021 Pixel Security Update is ready and you shouldn’t waste time installing it on your device.
This month’s patch fixes 42 bugs found in Android 8.1, 9, 10, and 11 that affect common components from multiple manufacturers and various pieces of Android software, including the Android kernel (the main piece of operating system software that controls a phone ). ).
Many of them are rated “high” vulnerabilities that could allow a hacker to steal or reveal your information, gain control over certain device functions, or execute malicious code remotely. Full Android Security Bulletin Notes are available here .
In terms of Pixel- related issues , the patch resolves seven medium-severity vulnerabilities affecting Qualcomm components and the Android kernel on Pixel devices.
Google does not offer more details on the vulnerabilities found or how the patch fixes them, but it recommends that all users install the update as soon as it becomes available to prevent attackers from exploiting security flaws.
The update is now available for Pixel 3, 3a and 4 phones (including XL models), Pixel 4a and 4a 5G and Pixel 5. You can check if the May security patch is available or is already installed on your device in the Android settings app.
- Select Settings> System> Advanced> System Update.
- Scroll down and check the date in the Security Patch Level section . If it’s May 5, 2021 or later, then you’re in the know.
- If the security patch level is earlier than May 5, 2021, go to Settings> Security. Click Check for Security Updates. If it’s available, follow the onscreen instructions to download it.
Android phones other than the Pixel will also receive the Android security update in the form of an OTA patch in the coming weeks. The exact update time depends on your device manufacturer and carrier.
