Why Is Your Gaming PC Worse After the Latest Windows 10 Update?
According to numerous reports, Windows 10 updates KB5000842 and KB5001330 are causing annoying performance bugs for games running in windowed modes. According to Microsoft’s patch notes, “A small group of users reported lower-than-expected gaming performance after installing KB5000842 or later. Most of the users affected by this issue run games in full screen or borderless windowed mode and use two or more monitors. “
If you notice stuttering or low frame rates suddenly affecting your games, this is probably why. Fortunately, this is easy to fix.
In the past, we typically asked users to uninstall these updates to fix the problem, and we encouraged other users to postpone their installation to avoid degrading the performance of their computers. However, Microsoft is offering an official fix with a new Rollback of Known Issues feature in Windows 10 that will take care of it for you.
Known Issue Rollback (KIR) is a relatively new feature that can “quickly revert a single targeted fix to a previously released behavior if a critical regression is detected.” Basically, KIR can automatically disable incorrect parts of a Windows update instead of forcing users to uninstall the entire update. This way, Microsoft can fix unexpected errors after the update, such as recent performance issues in games, and users can keep important security updates.
In fact, unlike regular Windows updates, the KIR process happens automatically in the background. Microsoft has used KIR many times in the past to prevent bugs from propagating once they were discovered.
If you’ve installed KB5000842 and KB5001330, you just have to wait for the fix to roll out for you. Microsoft says KIR can take up to 24 hours to fix the error and suggests restarting your computer if you don’t notice any changes. You can check if KIR is installed on your system by launching Registry Editor and checking if you have the following key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\FeatureManagement\Overrides\4\1837593227
If not, sit still. After removing the problematic updates, your PC’s gaming performance should be back to normal.
