How to Remove Dirt Between Glass Oven Doors
Deep cleaning usually involves cleaning spaces that you rarely think about, and that could mean you don’t even know how to clean them. I recently started cleaning my oven and after cleaning the glass it still looked pretty dirty. It was then that I realized that the double glazed glass was dirty on the inside .
At that moment, I considered it impossible and resigned myself to the fact that I was used to a foggy sight through the oven door, but a professional cleaner, Vanessa Amaro, came to the rescue. Here’s how to step between the glass door of your oven to restore a clear view of cooking.
Start at the bottom of the oven
First things first, do you have a brazier or drawer at the bottom of the oven? If you can pull the bottom out, you have a storage box. If the door opens like an oven, then you have a brazier. Let’s start with ovens with a bottom drawer.
Open the bottom drawer
To get inside the two panes of the glass oven door, you need to remove the bottom drawer. Under the oven door, you will see a narrow opening along the bottom edge of the door. Vanessa Amaro suggests using a store bought dust brush that is long and relatively thin. You can also use elastic bands to wrap the washcloth around the measure to hold it in place.
Moisten the cloth with your favorite cleaning solution (white vinegar and water are great), stick the cleaning brush into the hole, and start shaking. When you’re done, rinse the cloth and do this one last time to rinse the glass.
If you have a roaster, remove the oven door.
If you have a brazier and not a drawer in the bottom of the oven, you need to remove the door to get between the window pane. It sounds like a job for a professional (you can hire someone), but doing it yourself is not as scary as it seems. The oven door hinges are designed so that the door can be easily removed and will generally snap into place. The Art of Doing Stuff DIY website has detailed instructions on how to remove the oven door.
Insert a screwdriver into the back of the tab and push it forward. This will unlock the loop. Do this on both oven door hinges.
Now close the oven door so that it no longer closes and then lift it straight up. The door should slide out very easily.
Depending on the make and model of your oven, you can press on the tab, which will release the hinge and remove the door. After removing the door, the two panels may separate so you can clean each side with a sponge and cleaning solution. Otherwise, you can use your trusty yardstick with a cleaning rag to slide between the glasses.
If the hole at the bottom of the oven door is covered with a metal cover, simply remove the screws (placing them in a safe place for reattachment later) and follow the indicated cleaning instructions. You can watch the professionals demonstrate this in General Electric’s YouTube training video .
Cleaning between oven panes is not the most exciting task, but hopefully you will notice that little inconveniences go a long way.
