What’s New at Disney + April 2021

Little ones, gather around. Let me tell you a story about dark times in a galaxy far, far away. Before the prequels, sequels and animated series, there was a time after Return of the Jedi , when Star Wars just … stopped. George Lucas was not interested in making new films . Figurine sales were falling . The comic book series fizzled out . After the decisive battle against the Emperor and the second Death Star, fans who turned the three films into global blockbusters had nowhere to turn and nothing to expect. Except for the Ewoks. In 1984, Lucasfilm released Caravan of Courage , a televised film starring Ewoks, characters everyone loved unconditionally. Imagine there were no Star Wars novels, no Star Wars series – no animated series, no The Mandalorian – and instead, the only thing you should expect from Star Wars is something called “Day of the Porgs Rescue”. This is what it was like to be a Star Wars fan in the 80s.

Recognizing that nostalgia cares little for taste, Disney is giving you the opportunity to relive that era by releasing two Ewok television films on Disney + in April, Caravan of Courage and Ewoks: Battle for Endor . They both look pretty bad: low-budget, non-canon, cheesy, aimed right at the illegible kids. But are they … still Star Wars? As if? We took what we could get, that’s what I’m saying. There is much better in the way, in the form of Gendy Tartakovsky’s animated series The Clone Wars , which aired while the prequels were in theaters; these are all the actions of the Jedi that you could dream of, in short, for 3-5 minutes. Less fully endorsed, but still appreciated: the long nearly impossible to watch the EWOKS animated series from 1985 , which bodes well for the future additions of the sibling series, Droids , and the story of the Faithful Wookie , also known as animated segments from the infamous holiday issue of Stellar Wars, “ which gave us a first look at Boba Fett ( also known as the only, even slightly redeemable part of the Star Wars holiday special ).
