How to Patch Holes in Walls

You’ve probably gone through the same thinking process as every tenant: “I’m just going to hang the picture now and worry about it when I leave! What’s the difference!”

Well, it’s time to return the deposit and your walls look like a piece of Swiss cheese. Fortunately, we have some easy ways to patch these holes.

First, carefully remove the nail or picture hanger from the wall, being careful not to aggravate the damage. For added security, wrap a rubber band around the hammer or insert a paper towel between the hammer and the wall for extra cushioning. Make sure the wall is dry and free of debris before proceeding.

The real way to patch the hole is to buy a putty knife and putty knife at a hardware store. Stir with a spatula, then apply a pea-sized drop to the edge of the knife (technical term). You will need a little less than you think. Scrub several times to smooth, then finish with a damp sponge or cloth.

If you’re stuck, there are several options that will work as short term solutions (long enough for your workaround). You can use an old credit card instead of a spatula. And you can fill the hole with white toothpaste or rub it with a white bar of soap – these methods will look good until you get out of there and never look back.
