How to Finally Start Learning a New Skill

As we age, it becomes more difficult to make the leap into something new . I’m not talking about professional certificate courses; I’m talking about a skill that you learn from scratch.

In Newbies, Tom Vanderbilt mastered five new skills (with little to no use), just to see the benefits of learning new ones. As Vanderbilt points out, the benefits are only in the training itself.

So what’s stopping us from wasting time developing a new skill? Many people feel that they are too old or too poorly versed in something to actually take the time to do it. But Vanderbilt advises getting over that hump, and you’ll find that it’s not as bad as you think. (However, Vanderbilt notes that he quickly dropped out of welding classes.)

He suggests taking singing lessons as your first new venture. He notes that everyone has singing instruments, and you may find that you are not actually deaf – people just told you that.
