How to (Possibly) Fix AirPods Max Battery Drain Error
Some AirPods Max owners have encountered a weird battery drain issue that affects the earbuds even when not in use, but there might be a simple solution.
According to numerous posts on social media and forums, the AirPods Max can drain your battery quickly, completely discharging in just a few hours, even while sitting in their smart case (which should put them into ultra-low power mode). Some wearers say their earbuds have had a 1% battery charge per night.
Apple hasn’t commented on the issue and there are no official solutions, but there is a possible solution: Apple just released new AirPods max firmware, version 3C39. Apple does not provide patch notes for AirPods updates like they do for iOS and macOS, so we don’t know what this new firmware is changing. Hopefully the battery drain issue fix is included. We will know for sure when users will install the 3C39 firmware again.
Unfortunately, it is deploying slowly, so it may take a while before we know about it. That said, while we can’t confirm that version 3C39 fixes the battery life of the AirPods Max, it’s still wise to install the update as soon as possible.
How to update AirPods Max
AirPods firmware updates are installed automatically while the headphones are connected to your iPhone via Bluetooth and charging. The whole process takes place indirectly; if a patch is available, it will be downloaded and installed in the background. This simplifies system maintenance and means you might already have the patch installed, but you’ll need to dig into your iPhone’s settings to confirm the AirPods Max’s firmware version.
Here’s how to check it:
- Open the Settings app on your iPhone .
- Tap Bluetooth.
- Make sure your AirPods Max are turned on and listed under the connected devices column. If not, pair them with your iPhone before proceeding.
- Tap the information icon next to AirPods Max.
- Check the number listed in the Firmware Version section.
If the AirPods Max listed is version 3C39 (or higher), then you have the latest firmware. The previous version number is 3C16, so if this is what you see, you need to update the firmware, although, as we said earlier, you cannot perform this update manually.
Please note that it can take up to 30 minutes for the firmware update to be installed. Let your AirPods Max hang on the charger for half an hour, then check again. If the firmware is still an older version, you can try to force the update:
- On your iPhone, go to Settings> Bluetooth.
- Tap the information icon next to AirPods Max in the Connected Devices list.
- Click Forget This Device.
- Connect your Airpods Max to the charger.
- On your iPhone, go back to Settings> Bluetooth.
- Find your AirPods in the Other Devices list. Click to connect headphones to iPhone.
- Wait 30 minutes, then check the firmware version again.
This isn’t a guaranteed workaround, but it’s worth a try. If you are trying to upgrade, but still do not see it set, perhaps, the new firmware is not yet ready for your device. Wait a bit and try again. It should appear in the next few days.
