How ‘Proffee’ Becomes a Post Workout Protein Source
Proffee is the latest nutritional trend to hit TikTok, combining protein shakes and coffee. It’s a good source of protein, but if you think it’s a good alternative to frappuccino, you’re likely to be disappointed.
Typically, a protein shake is mixed in a bottle of iced iced coffee to make the drink, although you can use any protein and any type of coffee you like. Some add flavored syrups and even whipped cream.
Does it make a good protein drink?
As we discussed earlier, protein shakes are a convenient way to incorporate protein into your diet. You don’t need a protein shake after your workout (or at any other time); eat protein-rich foods normally throughout the day. But if you think protein drinks are convenient, then they are the real trick.
Because most professional recipes use bottled protein shakes, they contain the same amount of protein as the shake you are using. Check the label because they are different! The Premier Vanilla Shake contains 30 grams of protein and 160 calories in 11 ounces, while the Atkins version contains the same calories but only half the protein.
The rest of the shake will have the food you added. Coffee is very low in calories (about 5 calories in a large cup, no sugar). If you just mix the shake and some coffee, you get basically the same nutrients as the shake, plus some coffee flavor and some water. If you add syrups and whipped cream, you add a lot more sugar and calories.
Does it make good coffee?
Apparently … not really. The Insider team tried several types of protein coffees , deciding they were okay, but not necessarily better than just drinking a protein shake.
If you’re drinking the pros instead of ordering one of Starbucks’ sweetened drinks, which is essentially a milkshake, then yes, it probably has better macros. But it doesn’t taste exactly like frappuccino. If you crave a frappuccino that bad, you should probably just order it and adjust the remaining calories that day to match it if necessary.
After all, if you want to have more protein in your diet, you will have to regularly drink the pros to achieve positive results. Protein-added foods usually don’t make sense if you don’t plan them carefully in your diet. If you love the pros, just shut yourself off, but don’t feel like you’re changing your diet a lot by drinking a glass of this drink from time to time.
