Wine in a Box Is the Best Wine to Make
The preparation of the wine should be good enough to drink, but not so bad that you feel sick when pouring it into a sauce or stew. (Under no circumstances should it come in a bottle labeled “making wine.”) It’s easy to find a $ 10 bottle that tastes good when cooked with tomatoes, garlic, and onions, but harder to find the one I need … eat after pouring the desired aliquot for your dish. (Glass is still the best choice for long-term storage, however, as semi-permeable bags can only delay oxidation for a few months.)
Longer service life relieves pressure. The slight guilt and slight anxiety that might accompany opening a half-cup mid-range wine bottle that I need to prepare are a thing of the past – suddenly, the amount of wine does not become too commonplace. And even if you don’t manage to eat all of the wine in the box before it starts to change, the low price of the wine in the box will help soften the blow. A three-liter pack usually costs about $ 20, which equates to about $ 5 for a standard 750 ml bottle. ( Canned wine seems to offer similar benefits, but cans usually hold half a bottle and are not meant to be stored once opened.)
All this makes it a great wine for cooking, but it is also a great wine to make with wine. Wine in boxes is casual and free, devoid of the ritual usually associated with drinking wine – there is no cork – for environments that do not need all this pomp.
My boyfriend doesn’t drink and there’s no one around, which means that after the bottle is open, I have to use it all up before it flips over. And while I can certainly be able to drink 750 milliliters of wine in a few days, I don’t always feel like it. (I drank a lot less and I often get a headache if I drink more than two glasses a night. Aging is fun!) Sometimes I just need one glass for dinner or a couple ounces for a Sunday afternoon Kalimotho and wine in a box for me … (Conversely, if you have a lot of voracious wine lovers in your home, boxed wine is a very economical choice.)
In terms of quality, the boxed wine is better than the image would suggest. While Franzia is still very popular , it is far from the only box offering, and some of the boxes available are real bougie. I’m a Black Box fan, but a good strategy for finding good boxes is to search for “best wine in a box” and read the recommendations of the most snobbish site you can find. The trendiest boxes will set you back around $ 30, which is still pretty darn cheap.
