How to Create Tab Groups in Chrome for Android

Android has one of the best features in Chrome for keeping things organized: the omnipotent “tab groups” that let you group tabs into more useful blocks, rather than randomly scattering them around your browser or, on your phone, separate pages. However, you may have to enable a semi-hidden flag in your browser to access this useful feature today.

First, make sure your Android device has the latest version of Chrome , which can be updated through the Google Play Store. Then launch your browser and enter this in the address bar: chrome://flags

You will be taken to a screen that looks like this:

Do a quick search for Tab Grid, tap the drop-down list for the Tab Grid Layout checkbox , and select the normal Enabled option. Restart Chrome and click on the box to the right of the address bar to open several new tabs. You will immediately see that they are now organized in a grid, instead of showing pages stacked on top of each other.

How do you group these tabs? It’s simple. Just press and hold one and drag it over the top of the other. Repeat the process to add more tabs to your tab group:

You can also tap the group itself and use the “+” sign to add new tabs to it as you see fit. To group multiple tabs at the same time without pressing and holding each one individually, tap the three dots icon in the upper right corner of the screen and select the new ” Group Tabs” option. Then you can simply click on all the free tabs you want to organize into a group and then click the “ Group” button to make them new friends.

Finally, if you long press any hyperlink in a regular Chrome window, you will see the option to open a new tab in a group:

Click on it and the original page you were viewing will now be grouped together with the new link you long clicked and you will see icons for both at the bottom of the Chrome browser. It’s an easy way to navigate between tabs in your group, and you can also use the + icon on the right to quickly add additional tabs.

Of course, if you don’t like the layout of the grid or tab group, you can always disable this feature again using the same tab grid layout flag as before. Just set it to “disabled” and your browser will revert to its previous state – for now.
