You Can Now Share Your Smartphone Screen on the Discord App

Discord has finally added screen sharing to its Android and iOS apps. Now you can share the screen of your mobile device with 50 other people using voice channels or video calls.

Discord is primarily positioned as a gaming application, so the ability to share your device’s screen with others thus has an obvious appeal to users. you can stream the gameplay from your mobile device or, for example, show your D&D group a map of the dungeon they are in. But there are many non-gaming uses for screen sharing.

A lot of people use Discord as a free alternative to work from home apps like Zoom and Slack, which means you can now share a presentation from your iOS or Android device during voice or video calls. It is also a way to easily share photos, videos, or other media with your loved ones if they also use the app. Here’s how to do it.

How to share your screen in the Discord app on Android and iOS

To get started, update the Discord app or download the latest version from Google Play (Android) or Apple App Store (iOS). Discord is rolling out a screen sharing feature, so you may not have access to it right away. If so, do not despair; You don’t have to wait long to get it.

From there:

  1. Open the Discord app, then join a voice channel or video call.
  2. Tap “Share your screen” on the call control bar.
  3. The dialog box will explain how screen sharing works. Click “Try it!” to begin.
  4. The app will once again warn you that you are about to share your screen with others. When you’re ready to share what’s on your screen, click Start Now.
  5. The app will hook into the new screen sharing UI, but you can switch to other apps and use your phone normally while Discord is streaming to your viewers in the background.
  6. When you’re ready to stop, select Stop Sharing.

Remember, screen sharing allows your viewers to see everything that’s displayed on your phone or tablet screen in real time (unless the app allows screen sharing). While this will make it much easier to watch YouTube with your Discord group, it also means everyone will see your notifications or other potentially sensitive material if visible on screen. Make sure you close any apps you don’t want to accidentally switch, and turn on Do Not Disturb mode to turn off notifications before sending.
