What’s New on Netflix in January 2021

For those who spend a lot of time cursing the culture of nostalgia and lamenting the fact that the vast majority of new entertainment – from movies to Broadway musicals – seems to exist just to squeeze a little more money out of high-value IPs, I’m sure I love Cobra Kai from Netflix. Based on the 1980s franchise The Karate Kid – a TV series I don’t even really like – Cobra Kai (which returns for its third season on Netflix in January after switching from the now defunct YouTube Red ) is an incredibly perfect comfy TV. He moves on to the middle-aged characters from the original film – the loser hero Daniel Larousseau (Ralph Macchio), the owner of a fashion car dealership who uses his fading fame as a karate champion as a marketing gimmick; and Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka), a former bully who never recovered from his brutal defeat to Daniel at a high school tournament – and explores how they were influenced by past fame and shame.

While their children play notable roles – Daniel’s rebellious daughter Samantha (Mary Moser) and estranged son Johnny Robbie (Tanner Buchanan) and karate foster protege Miguel (Xolo Mariduenha) – they all see their lives intersecting in slightly convoluted ways – the show is not “Karate”. Kid: The Next Generation. ” It’s much more interesting: it’s some kind of parody of 1980s sports movies, an intimate teenage drama, and an oddly touching analysis of adult regret. It shouldn’t work, but it does a devastating blow. Can’t wait to watch more.

Otherwise, it’s a bright month for Netflix, with far fewer high-profile originals than we’re used to seeing from a streamer. Personally, I am looking forward to the Booker Prize winning film adaptation of The White Tiger (January 22). Here’s everything to come (and go) in early 2021.
