It’ll usually set you back $ 76 – at least that’s what Steam says – so getting this for free is pretty good value. As you can see, you can also get «Definitive Edition» Pillars of Eternity for free (value of $ 85 if you buy the game and all its DLC separately). This is another incredible isometric RPG game that will either have you wasting tens of hours of your time – in the best sense of the word – or give up in an hour because you were lit up by an early pack of enemies. However, I urge you to overcome this struggle as Pillars is a more difficult game to master.
Keep moving forward and you will find that this is a great, albeit challenging role-playing game. Perhaps consider playing this game at a normal (or easy) level until you really master the basics of the game. In fact, you will probably end up restarting your playthrough after spending some time on it, as you realize that your newbie character builds just don’t make as much sense as you thought. You probably want to give the game a second chance when you have a good idea of how it is played. Once you do, you find yourself rolling whatever you come across. And it’s fun!
I find that most of the joy of RPGs like these – those that give you significant control over your characters’ stats, abilities, equipment, and strategies – is mastering the mechanics. And once you’ve done that, hurray boy, can you challenge yourself by taking on the game on a higher difficulty setting. But even if that sounds like a lot of work, heck, beat Pillars and Tyranny in easy mode if you like. Storytelling is just as important as a good challenge, and none of these free RPG games will let you down.
