The Adult’s Guide to Childhood Culture: Cabin Fever Edition
Remember that old curse about living in “interesting times”? Well, we’re there, but I had no idea interesting times would be boring as hell. While history-defining events take place daily, I’m going to make homemade pickles and drink entire seasons of 60 Days In . If I hadn’t been in quarantine eight months later – if it hadn’t been for the boring times – I wouldn’t have fiddled with a weird reality show, but we’re all doing things that we wouldn’t be doing lately. Kids have home fever too, and you can tell what they are doing this week.
TikTok is going crazy
TikTok almost smells like isolation; how else can you explain the trend of oil dogs? Dogs with oil, if you are not hepatitis, they are dogs with oil on their heads. That’s all. That’s it: people are posting videos of dogs with oil on their heads. Here is theten-hour edition of Butter dog. A dog with oil on it ” so you can understand what I mean. See it all; you have nothing else to do.
Another example of “too long” internet: number seven TikTok. Videographer @ rawrits.alex recently posted a fairly typical video of some footballers lip-syncing to a Justin Bieber song, unaware that TikTok will lose its collective mind over lovable dude number seven. A tribute video, marriage proposals and who knows what else followed, and the Michigan high school student is currently enjoying his 15 minutes of internet fame (hopefully staying home and not infecting anyone).
Viral Video of the Week: Kahoot Star
I love the viral video this week because it is very specific to the kids’ experience in distance learning situations. YouTuber Kyle Exam “Kahoot Star” is a rap song that shows off her prowess in … Kahoot? Kahoot is an online group quiz app that teachers use to make distance learning a little more fun, and it is just as much like an energetic, creative kid mastering his or her mastery of a multi-choice educational app and turning it into rap. The lyrics are funny, with lines like: “I quickly press the bell button and take first place.” Green, I understand, if you are not me, then you are just a fake, ”and the introductory sketches that introduce this are also funny. Unsurprisingly, it was viewed nearly a million times on its first day online. Check outKahoot Star here .
On TV This Week: Cartoons Are Back!
Regular production of films and TV is challenging when you have to stay socially distanced, which is why production companies and networks are increasingly turning to animation and we are getting rewarded. Disney + is unveiling this week’s Lego Star Wars Holiday Special , an animated tribute to the worst Star Wars product of all time, The Star Wars Holiday Special . Unlike the horrific 1978 television series, the Lego Star Wars Holiday Special is meant to be fun. In it, Lego Rey discovers a key that sends her back in time, allowing her to celebrate her Day of Life with caustic, jokingly difficult encounters with characters from all the different variations on the series. I hope for the Lego Jefferson Starship to appear like in the original series.
Meanwhile, in Hulu, the beloved cartoon Animaniacs of the 1990s is rebooting, and today children do not even realize how much they will like it. Warner brothers Yakko, Wakko and sister Warner Dot reappear in the present with their sly, sarcastic meta-comments, and 2020 stands no chance against the manic energy and bouncy songs of the Animanyaks. Uh … I mean, at least in the context of a cartoon. The actual 2020 is unlikely to be affected in any way, and will almost certainly remain the hellish work we are used to. But at least there is a new cartoon.
This week in games: how are the new consoles performing?
The next generation of consoles kicked off about a week ago with the release of the PlayStation 5 and the new Xbox, and all kid gamers have nothing to do all day but play games while they wait for the vaccine. Optimal for them. So how’s it going so far? Really good judging by the memes.
There don’t seem to be those widespread technical issues that have prevented consoles from launching in the past (remember the red ring of death ?). The worst thing that seems to be said is that the PlayStation is quite large . People pose with their new systems or compare them to all the systems they’ve had since 1978 . There are deep and important discussions on the internet about which startup titles are the best, and people are shouting at them . I don’t want to jinx it, but it’s almost normal .
