How to Transfer Old Games to Xbox Series X

The Xbox Series X may not have many exclusive game consoles at launch, but it can play all games from any previous generation of Xbox, including the original Xbox, Xbox 360, and Xbox One, as well as with improved load times and visual load performance. You can even transfer your old save data to the new console to pick up where you left off.

There are several ways to transfer your old Xbox games and save data to your Xbox Series X or Series S. We’ll go over each so you can find the method that works best for your setup.

Importing Cloud Saves

The fastest way to play old games on a new computer is to simply insert the disc into your Xbox Series X drive or download it from your digital library. However, you will need to import your saves in a different way. Using the following Wi-Fi or external hard drive transfer methods will work, but you can also automatically access your old game data on your new Xbox via the cloud.

There is no real setting here if you’re already using cloud saves on Xbox One; Once you sign in to the new X-Series, all your saved files in the cloud will automatically sync with the games you install.

Copying data via external storage

The following transfer method allows you to transfer your Xbox One games and save everything to Series X at once. For this you need an external hard drive; if you don’t have one, you can use the Wi-Fi data transfer method described in the next section instead.

  1. Copy your Xbox One games and save the data to an external drive. Go to Settings> System> Storage , then select your external storage device.
  2. Select all the data you want to transfer, then click “Copy”.
  3. Wait for the transfer to complete, then disconnect the external drive.
  4. Then turn on your Xbox Series X and connect your storage device to your console through one of the USB ports.
  5. The Series X should recognize the drive and ask you what you want to do next. (You can also see if the drive shows up under Settings> System> Storage ).
  6. From the Storage menu, select any games and other data you want to import into Series X, then select Copy. (Note: Some games can be played from an external drive and do not need to be copied to Series X).

Wi-Fi data transfer

You can send all installed games and other system data from Xbox One to the new Series X over Wi-Fi. This requires both consoles to be turned on and connected to the same network. The transfer may take a while if you are copying a lot of games (or have a slow Wi-Fi connection), but it’s a great way to transfer your Xbox One library in one go.

  1. On Xbox One, go to Settings> System> Backup & Transfer , then select Allow Online Transfer.
  2. Then turn on your Xbox Series X and go to Settings> System> Backup & Transfer.
  3. Under Local Consoles, select your Xbox One.
  4. Select the games and other data you want to import from Xbox One to Series X.
  5. Select “Copy” to start transferring.
