How to Get Apple to Replace Faulty AirPods Pro
Some Apple Airpods Pro owners have been reporting strange Active Noise Canceling (ANC) issues with their headphones over the past few months. For some, ANC doesn’t work at all; others hear strange static, crackling, or crackling noise when using this feature.
Some of these ANC performance issues were caused by poor firmware, which has since been fixed , but bug reports persist. If you’re having this problem, Apple will replace your AirPods Pro for free. This is a welcome solution, but the replacement program has several limitations:
- Apple says only AirPods Pro released prior to October 2020 have a faulty ANC and the company will only replace purchases made within the past two years. This should be the case for everyone today as the AirPods Pro came out in October 2019, but you don’t want to hesitate.
- Replacement AirPods Pro are not covered by an extended warranty.
- Apple will not be replacing the AirPods Pro charging case as part of the program.
- Only devices with confirmed ANC problems are allowed. You cannot send a pair that you accidentally rub in your laundry or otherwise spoil.
You can get a set of replacement earbuds for free, but you need to have your defective AirPods Pro examined by an Apple support representative or an Apple Authorized Service Provider, including Best Buy stores. Apple Stores have adopted strict COVID-19 safety guidelines after reopening earlier this year, so make sure you follow protocol if you intend to test your AirPods Pro.
For those who can’t (or don’t want to) go to their local Apple store or certified repair service provider, Apple lets you mail in your headphones for free repair or replacement. Apply through the Apple Support website, then follow the instructions to submit them. You will receive a new pair in the mail in a few days if you qualify.
