Your Netflix Subscription Just Got More Expensive

Netflix yesterday announced its first price hike in nearly two years. (Adam Sandler originals like Hubie Halloween don’t pay off on their own.) New plans changed to:

  • An additional $ 1 for the standard plan , now $ 13.99 per month.
  • An additional $ 2 for the premium plan (4K resolution and HDR image quality), now $ 17.99 per month.
  • The basic plan remains the same at $ 8.99 per month.

This price change will affect all current subscribers, so expect your monthly bill to increase in the coming weeks if you have a Standard or Premium plan (new prices take effect immediately for new subscribers). Netflix also canceled free trials recently.

Revaluation of TV subscriptions

With prices rising, now is perhaps the best time to take stock of your TV subscription services. According to a study by DecisionData , the average cable TV bill is $ 217.42 a month, but according to West Monroe , consumers are increasingly paying for subscription services, including streaming TV, at an average of $ 237 a month. Considering that the average American has four streaming TV services, costs could rise.

Cord trimming can save you money on traditional cable TV, but that doesn’t mean you necessarily benefit from what you pay for with on-demand streaming services. Re-evaluating subscription services after price increases is always a good rule of thumb. To find out if it’s really worth your money, ask yourself:

  • Do I know the total cost of all my TV subscriptions?
  • How often do I use the streaming service?
  • What service do I use least of all? When was the last time I used it?

If you realize you’ve only watched half of Sex Is Lava in the past six months, it might be time to cancel. (You can always re-subscribe if you decide to finish the second half of this episode later.)

Other streaming options

Here’s a short list of the main POD alternative services and their prices that can help you prioritize or cut your services (there are also an infinite number of streaming options filling the niche ):
