How to Scan a Barcode With Snapchat for Wine and Nutrition Information

Snapchat is best known for its short-term photos and videos – and all of its weird face filters – but the app can do a lot more. Once the latest Snapchat update hits your device, you can “scan” the food package to see nutritional information. More importantly, you can also find tasting details and pairing suggestions by taking pictures of your wine. Who knew Snapchat could improve your sommelier game?

The Snapchat Scanner only works with packaged foods. So, while it will help you know how many calories there are in your morning oatmeal packet, you won’t be able to track chicken breast macros by scanning a piece of frozen meat.

However, you will get more than just basic nutritional information. The appendix lists the tastes of foods, as well as the pros and cons of eating them – for example, if they have too much sugar or are rich in protein compared to other foods. The search results are provided by the Yuka food tracking app. On the other hand, the wine scanner extracts data on over 12 million wines from the Vivino app.

Other Things You Can Find With Snapchat’s Visual Search

Snapchat’s new food and wine scanning features will be available to everyone, but they’re still rolling out right now. If you don’t see them yet, maybe try one of Snapchat’s other visual search filters in the meantime.

There are filters to solve math equations, search for products on Amazon, and even identify dog breeds or plant varieties. There’s also a built-in Shazam feature for when you’re trying to figure out the title of a song that’s playing on the radio.

To access them:

  1. Open Snapchat.
  2. On the camera tab, tap the filters icon.
  3. Click Scan in the bottom menu.
  4. Move to one of the visual search icons on the left.
  5. Move the cursor over the object you want to find in the viewfinder, then press Scan under the shutter button.
  6. As soon as the application recognizes the scanned item, the search results appear on the screen.
