How to Make a Tuxedo # 4

I think I am pretty good at martini and its variations, so I am always pleasantly surprised when someone can introduce me to a new martini. I interviewed food writer Alicia Kennedy this week for the upcoming release of How I Eat , and she mentioned that her partner did a lot of # 4 tuxedos, a martini riff made with fino sherry instead of vermouth.

I accidentally had some fino sherry in my fridge, so this cocktail was a light and welcome addition to my martini repertoire. I am happy to report that this is delicious. It’s slightly nuttier than your classic martini (because of the sherry) and goes well with all the usual side dishes, as well as the less common orange zest strip.

Accordingly, you can cook it like your favorite martini. I chose two and a half ounces of gin and half an ounce of sherry, but you can use any of these four iconic martini ratios . I think a # 4 50/50 tuxedo would be especially interesting.

Most tuxedo # 4 recipes require a few drops of orange bitterness, which is pretty tasty in my opinion, although don’t worry if you don’t have them. Jin and sherry are very good with no frills. To make a tuxedo # 4 you will need:

  • 2 1/2 ounce gin
  • 1/2 ounce fino sherry
  • 3 drops of orange bitter

Combine all the ingredients in a glass of ice and stir until the drink is very, very cold. Strain in your compartment, garnish with a strip of orange peel if desired, and enjoy.
