These Dog Food Brands Have Been Recalled

It’s Time To Check Dog Food Labels: The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is warning consumers and veterinarians that 18 different dog food brands are part of a voluntary recall. All products were manufactured by Sunshine Mills, but under different brand names and may contain potentially harmful levels of mold toxin. Here’s what you need to know.

Why is the food remembered?

Sunshine Mills announced an initial voluntary recall on September 2, 2020 after the Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry discovered that a sample of their retail dog food product contained unsafe levels of aflatoxin, a toxin produced by Aspergillus flavus mold . If ingested in large quantities, it can cause serious illness or death in dogs and other pets. And just because you can’t see mold on food doesn’t mean the toxin isn’t there, according to the FDA.

The voluntary recall was expanded on Oct. 8 , and the FDA issued public guidelines for all dog food brands involved to make sure people are not feeding potentially toxic foods that may have been purchased a few weeks ago and are still pending. their shelves to their dogs.

What does aflatoxin poisoning do to dogs?

According to the FDA, pets with aflatoxin poisoning can experience symptoms such as :

  • Slowness
  • Loss of appetite
  • Vomit
  • Jaundice (yellowish tinge to the eyes, gums, or skin due to liver damage)
  • Diarrhea

Since dogs are not prone to a lot of variety in their diets when they eat foods containing aflatoxin, it can build up over time, in some cases causing long-term liver problems and / or death. It’s also important to note that some pets suffer from liver damage without any symptoms, so even if your dog looks fine, if it has eaten any of the 18 recalled brands, their people should contact their veterinarians. There is currently no evidence that people who handle foods containing toxic mold are at risk of poisoning, the FDA says .

What to do if you bought a recalled dog food

If your dog looks or behaves badly after eating these brands, call your veterinarian immediately. Bring your dog’s entire diet history to the veterinarian, along with photographs of the labels (including batch numbers) of the food that you think caused him the illness.

Of course, don’t give the recalled foods to your dog or other pets. How to report suspected aflatoxin poisoning to the FDA

If you suspect that your dog has been poisoned by recalled dog food, it is recommended that you report it to the FDA.
