Fix Google Pixel Auto Brightness Error and More With Latest Android Update

Google’s October Android Security Patch is out today. These regular updates fix OS-level security bugs for all Android devices, but this month’s patch also contains a number of bug fixes for Pixel devices running Android 11.

Take the Pixel 4a, for example. It has only been out since August, but owners are reporting delays and inaccurate auto-brightness settings in rooms lit by LEDs and other high-intensity lights .

Some users also experienced bad reaction when using the screen cover on their device. Installing the October 2020 security update should fix both of these issues, as well as several others.

Google’s monthly update also addresses a number of security flaws, including six critical issues related to Qualcomm components, so there’s really no reason to hesitate to download. That, and Google has fixed enough minor flaws that you’ll want to fix if you’re using one of the supported Pixel phones. The patch applies to Pixel 2, 3, 3a, 4 and 4a, as well as any XL models.

Here is a list of Pixel bugs that have been fixed by the October 2020 security patch (via Google Support ):

  • Improvements to auto brightness under certain lighting conditions (Pixel 4a).
  • Touch sensitivity improvements with screen protectors (Pixel 4a).
  • Improved auto-rotate on certain device orientations (Pixel 3, 3a, 4, and 4a devices).
  • Fixed an issue that caused some devices to freeze while loading (Pixel 2, 3, 3a, 4, and 4a devices).
  • Fix to prevent unintentional disabling of call notifications (Pixel 2, 3, 3a, 4, and 4a devices).
  • Fixed missing auto-rotate icon in certain device orientations (Pixel 2, 3, 3a, 4, and 4a devices).
  • Fixed an issue that prevented the browse swipe gesture from showing up in the launcher (Pixel 2, Pixel 3, 3a, 4, 4a devices).

The update will soon hit all Pixel devices running Android 11, but the exact timing will differ between devices and carriers. These monthly fixes are usually installed automatically, so you may already have them. You can check by confirming your phone’s firmware in Android settings:

  1. Go to Settings> About phone.
  2. Click “Android Version”.
  3. Check the date listed in the Android Security Update section . This new patch will be dated October 5, 2020.

If the date is October 5, 2020 (or later), you have the patch. If this is before, you can try downloading the new security update manually by going to Settings> Security> Security Update and clicking Check for Updates. Install whatever is in stock.
