Replace the Little Things That Annoy You
For some reason, I held on to my last nonstick skillet for 12 years. I bought it in Florida, moved it to Portland, and took it with me when I moved out of my ex-husband’s house. In truth, about a year ago it was working “fine”, but there is a fine line between beautiful and annoying.
Things didn’t stick to the pan, but neither did they slip out of the pan as they used to. My scrambled eggs hesitated, my fish clamored, my potato pancakes lasted too long. Not exactly the problems caused by my old non-stick frying pan weren’t insurmountable in any way, but they annoyed me very little every day and I started to resent it.
Obviously, this problem had a very simple solution – I just had to buy a new non-stick frying pan. And I did it (it was $ 25). But it’s amazing how long I’ve allowed myself to annoy myself almost every day with this sticky non-stick frying pan. And while I won’t pretend to know the life of every person who might read this, I am guessing that there is probably an item in your home that works less perfectly than it should and causes daily annoyance. You must replace this item.
I know that you know what I’m talking about – this thing that technically works fine, but annoys you a little every time you use it. Probably not such a big thing (like a car). It is small and you forgive its shortcomings because it works “fine” and you don’t “need” a new one. I ask you to value yourself a little more and drop it. This could be a leaking soap dispenser, a frayed broom, or a cracked coffee pot. Just get rid of it. Buy new. Free yourself. (Especially if it’s a 12-year-old sticky non-stick frying pan. Nobody needs it in life.)
