Store Emergency Cocktails in the Freezer

Every Friday morning I make a cocktail (for work), and every Friday morning I resist the urge to drink the whole cocktail right now. I can feel it, obviously, but I’m not as young as I once was, and writing while drunk is not as fun as Hemingway would say. Rather than pouring the drink down the drain – which would be foolish and wasteful – I would pour it into small jars and hide it in the freezer to enjoy later – which is smart and good.

Sometimes I forget about the cocktail by Friday night, but I always remember it when I need it . Nothing handles an emotional crisis like a cocktail, but making a cocktail in the midst of an emotional crisis is not the best option. I’m talking about the fact that ready-to-drink cocktails are sealed in small jars – this in itself is good. This is exactly the same as planning meals, only with alcohol instead of chicken breasts.

And while I’ve talked about dispensing cocktails before , it’s a little different. First, I don’t make one big bottle of one kind of cocktail; I make many different cocktails per serving because I love variety. I usually make them for work, but your work might be a little different, so you can do them whenever you normally make cocktails – just add each time. Before you know it, you have a freezer full of alcoholic beverages ready for emergency use. You can also incorporate cocktail making into your regular meal plan, if you do.

Not all cocktails are the same strength, and cocktails with a lot of juice tend to turn into slush in the freezer, but that never bothered me. However, this happens less with the classics: even with the dilution caused by stirring, alcoholic beverages such as martinis and manhattan will not freeze, but become very thick and incredibly cold, which is a wonderful treat for the senses. You can dilute them with a little water rather than stir with ice (PUNCH suggests a formula for this), but I usually just make a cocktail and stir as usual before pouring it into a jar, preferably a jar of Bonne Maman jam.

In fact, you don’t have to think too much: every time you make a shake, make another one and put it in the freezer. Every time you have a short break, make a shake and put it in the freezer. Every time you prepare a meal, make a couple of smoothies and place them in the freezer. This is called advance planning, and although I don’t do it often, sometimes I do it very well.
