How to Cook Cereals in an Instant Saucepan

I will never understand people who do not like to eat cereals, but I understand people who do not like to make cereals. As with risotto and polenta, this process usually requires good stirring, and I just hate standing still in front of the stove. The good news is that you can cook the cereal in an instant pot. You still have to interfere a little , but much less – I’m talking three minutes, maximum.

Just like A.A. Newton makes his Instant Pot polenta , the success of the Instant Pot cereal comes from a little premix, but very little. Simply stir the corn slices, boil and whisk, then use the Porridge IP feature to finish them off. Boiling and beating the cereal before closing the appliance will ensure that it moves as you do so, and this will prevent them from clumping or sticking to the bottom during cooking. There is no need to soak the cereals first – pressure cooking softens them, which means you can put them on the table after about 40 minutes without even planning ahead. Your total active preparation time is approximately five minutes, which is quite enough time to be active. I got my IP this morning, then took a shower and made a coffee; the cereal finished cooking just as I poured my first cup.

Ingredients:

  • 1 glass of cereal
  • 4 glasses of water
  • 2 large pinches of salt and more to taste
  • 3 tablespoons butter
  • Pepper to taste

Instructions:

Add cereal and water to the Instant Pot, stir and leave alone for a minute. Remove the insert from the appliance, tilt it slightly and remove any floating pieces (chaff and husks) using a small sieve or fine tea strainer. Return the insert to the instant pot and add two large pinches of salt.

Press the Sauté button and select More with the Adjust button. Let the grits boil, stirring often with a metal whisk and scrubbing the bottom to make sure none of the grits settle or stick. As soon as the cereal boils, continue beating for another minute until it continues to bubble and flop, even if you are not stirring it vigorously. Close the instant pot, press the Porridge button and set the More value using the Adjust button.

After the cooking time has elapsed, allow the pressure to completely release or wait at least 10 minutes before releasing it manually (if you are in a hurry). The cereal will appear loose at first, but it will thicken as it cools. Add butter, taste and add salt and pepper (or more butter) if necessary.
