Get up and Do a Few Circles With Your Hands
Did you forget to get up from time to time for a walk ? Since we talked about this last week, I definitely walked more than I did before, but not necessarily on those small and frequent trips I was planning.
It’s so damn hot . Sometimes I manage to walk around the block, but more often I prefer to wait until about 8pm, when I go out for 30 minutes or so. I will listen to a podcast (most recently the episode “You’re Wrong About Coco the Gorilla” ). One day my four-year-old daughter insisted on going with me, and I knew she wouldn’t last all the time, so I took a short walk with her instead of not walking at all. “Anything is better than nothing” is my mantra when it comes to walking, and you know what? It helps.
So, continue with these daily walks if you like, but this week we will be adding something new to your daily routine. It’s easy, it’s a little boring, and a lot harder than what such a simple thing deserves. I’m talking about this old classic gymnastics, arm circles .
Wherever you are, stand up and make a few circles with your hands. Or do them from a chair if necessary. Want to experience your whole body? Stand on a chair (or any other comfortable surface) and walk back while you do this.
How does it feel? Are your shoulders burning? I did this after one minute of forward laps as suggested in the video, but I had to take a break before trying the reverse. If you prefer a number target, aim for 50 circles in each direction, or 20, or whatever number you think works best, to give you a short active break from the cold at the table or on the couch.
