Turn Frappuccino Into Alcoholic Mud
Bottled frappuccino never stops taking me back to 1999. I’m 13 years old – all Clinique Happy and butterfly clips – and sipping a chilled Mocha coffee drink from a glass bottle feels like the height of adult sophistication. I didn’t think about this drink for a long time until I saw an excerpt from Delish that we had been drinking them “all wrong for years.”
According to TikTok user @naatalie_lee , these sweetened coffee drinks should be placed in the freezer for several hours to effectively supercool . Once one has cooled down properly, all you have to do is open and shake the drink (to create nucleation centers) and – boom – you have a coffee-flavored slush. That’s all well and good, but the original bottled frappuccino consumers (also known as the owners of Clinique Happy) are now in their 30s and it’s time for the drink to grow with us. It’s very easy to do – just add a shot (or three) of alcohol.
Alcohol will, of course, lower the freezing point of the coffee drink, but that just means you need to freeze it a little longer. To find out what time it was, I bought a large 13.7-ounce bottle of mocha-flavored Frap, drank three ounces, and then replaced my consumed coffee with two ounces of vodka and one ounce of Fernet-Vallet. After about four hours (and checking every hour) I had slush.
To test the limits of my drunken drink, I left it in the freezer overnight and was thrilled to find that it was still wet – not rock-hard – when I took it out in the morning. It was a little icy at first, but stirring it quickly with a straw at room temperature turned it into a drink you can drink, as you can see above. If you don’t have Fernet, you can use a different liquor or replace it with 3/4 ounce vodka. If your frappuccino has one smaller side (9.5 ounces), use two ounces of alcohol instead of three. However, the flavor of Frap is entirely up to you.
