How to Take a Fingerprint
International travel requires a lot of paperwork and identification documents, including fingerprinting. I am a seasoned traveler and know that I am not the only one who has had to be fingerprinted more than once, both electronically and in the form of ink on paper. This process can be time-consuming, but there is actually a correct way to get correct fingerprints the first time without any problems, i.e. without having to do it three or four times until the fingerprint technician can get a clean fingerprint. Here’s how to get the right fingerprint on the first try and be on the go.
Many “bad” fingerprints are caused by skin that is too oily or too dry. It is not recommended to wash your hands and use hand sanitizer before fingerprints are taken. However, since we live in a global pandemic, I highly recommend doing both, but when you moisturize afterwards, use a non-oil lotion.
When you place your fingers on a surface that will record your fingerprint – be it an electronic document or a piece of paper – it is important not to press your finger in the middle. Starting at the outer corner, slide your finger across the paper or screen, pressing down hard until your finger is comfortably centered.
If your prints are electronically captured, do not start moving the numbers until you get permission from the device or the person who controls it. If you are using an ink pad, the person using it will likely give you precise instructions on how to position your fingers; before the pandemic, they would probably even physically manipulate your fingers with their hands.
